H1N1?

Last week Leah from La Vida Cheapo had a sound off on how people were feeling about the media hype on the H1N1 issue.

My response was this.

I think it's to early to say. The actual Flu season has not even begun. I am taking every precaution to make sure my family or I do not get it. I know of three different families that have had the H1N1 and it has taken them quite a while to get over it. I believe the media is extremly one sided but if this illness is killing people we should all be taking a few more precautions. I'm sure everyone knows someone with underlying health concerns and would not want them to contract an illness that could kill them.

Well as you can see it's the middle of the night and I'm up as a worried mother because my nine year old woke up with a fever, sore throat and says that she feels like she can hardly breathe.  These are things that you don't want to hear this time of year.

My first reaction was to give her pain reliever, a Triaminic thin strip, rub her down with vicks, start her on extra liquids, add an extra blanket to her bed.  And of course wash my hands.

I tried to lay down after I had gotten her settled but then you start thinking of  how you are going to keep the rest of the family from coming down with it.  Where did she pick this up?  I noticed at the Fall Harvest party in her class today that the boy who sits next to her was absent.  Of course noone wants to miss a party unless they are ill.

While you are feeling terrible for your sick child you imagine placing plastic over her door and taping it off so noone else becomes ill.  I then of course think about wisking my youngest off to my Mom's house until the illness is out of the house.  But what if she has already been exposed? The girls were rolling around laughing and playing last night.  I wouldn't want my Mom and sister to get it too.  I don't have to worry about my oldest getting it, as he's a teenager and never home.  My husband will hide until it's all over so more then likely it's just me and my youngest I need to worry about.

We have taken many precautions to not get sick in our household.  I have wiped down everything with the clorox wipes that I got for almost free.  I have sprayed the house with Lysol.  The kids wash their hands after we go anywhere.  My kids carry the anti bacterial gel with them wherever they go.

So how do I feel about H1N1? It scares me!  Noone ever wants to hear your child crying from their bedroom that they feel like they can hardly breathe.  Not everyone is going to get it the same. It might be a mild flu for some it might be worse.

What I do know is if your sick or feeling like you are sick you need to stay home and be responsible.  While I was at work yesterday there was a lady in my store coughing all over the place she looked like she was on her death bed. She stopped in to pick up something her son needed. But, what she forgot to think about was that she had something that none of my associates needed HER GERMS!

Albertsons 10/28

Wow SuperBob at Hot Coupon World wasn't kidding when he said it was a crummy ad.
Well Here it is!

Thanks SuperBob for the preview

Board Games anyone?

Leah at La Vida Cheapo has a link to some great coupons for some board games Head on over to see what she has found. We love to play games while we are camping.  Santa always brings new games for our travel trailer.  I'm a little competitive so my hubby refuses to play. (He's a Sore loser)

Walgreens

For some reason I didn't receive a Walgreens ad in my Newspaper this morning.  But I noticed that Jane at All together beautiful has a great list of this weeks Walgreens deals. So head on over and see what she has put together.

Menu Plan

Last week was one of the first weeks in a while that I did not plan a menu for my family. Needless to say we ended up eating out twice because I didn't have a plan.  With the amount of food that we have in this house right now it is ridiculous that I would even consider eating out.  Since my husband will not eat a meal without meat I decided to head to the freezer and pull meat out for the week and then plan my menu around it.

Sunday
Spaghetti
Salad
Texas Toast

Monday
Sweet potatoes
Corn

Tuesday
Stuffing
Oven roasted zuchinni

Wednesday
Sweet and Sour Meatballs
Scalloped potatoes
Green Beans

Thursday

Friday
Beef Broccoli Stir Fry
White Rice

Saturday
Make your own Pizza night (A kids favorite)

Transactions gone bad!

If your new or a seasoned couponer and your finding that your transactions do not always go smoothly your not alone.  I had such a tough week that I started feeling a little discouraged.

It started off at Target this week.  It literally took the cashier 30 minutes to ring me up.  I had 30 items, 20 manufacturer coupons and 10 Target. She was taking each item out of the bag and trying to match the items up to the coupon.  I was trying to be nice because I could see how flustered and stressed out she was by my coupons (Her neck was completely red and her cheeks were flushed) But I really wanted to get out of there. I suggested that she just scan the coupon and the register would tell her if the coupon did not match up but she didn't want to listen. Finally I waved down the front end Manager to come over and help. (Not sure why she didn't come over herself when the line wasn't moving)  Then the front end manager tried to tell me that I couldn't use the $6.00 Airwick freshner coupon because their price was only $5.99. I had to inform her of her own coupon policy and she of course pushed it through.  I was so frustrated when I got home that I didn't even want to brag that I had gotten $170 worth of product for only $4.50.

My second issue was at Walmart.  I was using 20 coupons on 20 items and the register prompted for a CSR because everything I purchased had a coresponding coupon.  The cashier was very nice and friendly but Walmart has a new system that when a CSR is needed the register is supposed to prompt for the CSR to come to the register. (I guess the register is supposed to automatically page them) Well the system is extremely flawed because after 5 minutes of waiting I had to run down to the CSR podium and tell them that their new system "Stunk" and that I had been waiting for them to turn the key so that I could pay and get out of their store.

My third issue was at Safeway.  I purchased  (4) John Morrell sausages .99 each.  I had a coupon for $1.00 off the sausages but Safeways new policy is that they will not take a coupon for an item that is lower then the value of the coupon. I asked if they could just raise the price of the sausage by .01 and they would not.  I then asked if they could just use 3 of the coupons and they would not do that either.

My fourth issue was last night at Walgreens. I was trying to use some of my RR but they would not scan. (They needed to change the ink on the Catalina machine) The cashier told me that she couldn't take it because it wouldn't scan.  I asked her to call the manager up because this is their RR.  The Manager proceded to tell me that she couldn't take it either.  I was so annoyed.  I told her that I wanted her District  Managers phone number is the kindest voice I could manage. For some reason she decided to hand enter the Catalinas and they worked. Surprise! Surprise!

I'm telling you this because couponing is not always perfect.  There are lot's of glitches in the system and always new people that have not been trained properly on company policies. Don't get discouraged and give up.  Couponing is one of the greatest ways to save your family money.

Coupon Integrity

I ran into a friend today that works for a local grocery store he told me that the store was having problems with people using fraudulent internet coupons.  The problem is that people are taking coupons that they have printed off the internet and are making copies of them. It makes me extremely angry that people would risk their own integrity to steal from a grocery store.   I'm going to repeat this because making a copy of a coupon is actually STEALING from the store.  A manufacturer does not give a store credit for coupons that have been copied.  This should make all honest couponers angry as stores will start punishing everyone if this fraud continues.  I'm asking that anyone who reads this blog to please be honest when using coupons.  I know that 99.9% of couponers are honest.  I also know there have been plenty of times that I wish that I could print a few more coupons but never at the cost of my Integrity!

Last week I told my daughter that she could either take store bought cupcakes to school with her on Friday or she could wait until Monday and I would make cupcakes.  Well, you can see she picked Monday.

I got this cupcake idea from Bakerella.  They were so cute I thought how hard could those be? Well 28 cupcakes boats later I realized it was a five hour job!  A special thanks to my Son Tyler for helping make all of those hamburger boats. If your interested in making these yourself I urge you to do some of it ahead.  Listed below is what I used.

(2) Boxes of Brownie Mix (Free from previous purchase)
